It was announced today that due to phenomenal demand, the run of the Druid production of Big Maggie at the Gaiety Theatre has been extended until 12 March. These are the only Irish dates for this production in 2016.  Tickets from €21 are now on sale. Extra school matinees have also been added on Wed 17 February, Wed 24 February, Wed 2 March and Wed 9 March.

Druid’s acclaimed production of Big Maggie  has returned to the Gaiety.  Aisling O’Sullivan makes a welcome return in the title role of Big Maggie and Keith Duffy reprises his role as the lusty commercial traveller Teddy Heelin. Joining them are some of Ireland’s finest actors Clare Barrett, Charlotte McCurry, Karen McCartney, Muiris Crowley, Emmet Byrne, Clare Monnelly, Joan Sheehy, Frank O’Sullivan and John Olohan who received an Irish Times Irish Theatre Award for his role as Byrne in Druid’s 2011 production of Big Maggie.

Money, land and secret sex make for a riveting story in what remains one of John B Keane’s most popular plays. The production is directed by Tony award winner Garry Hynes who said she is ‘thrilled to be returning to the work of John B. Keane with this production.’
Set in 1960s rural Ireland and shocking for its time – the play premiered in 1969 – Big Maggie is a compelling portrait of a woman who is determined to take control of her life following the death of her husband.

Big Maggie is also a prescribed single text on the English Leaving Certificate with many students around the country studying the play for their 2016 exams*.  Special schools offer with tickets from €16 Monday - Thursday including Wednesday matinees, from €20 for Saturday matinees, and a free teacher ticket with every 10 tickets purchased. Joanna Keane, English teacher at Presentation Secondary School Tralee and daughter of John B Keane, has written educational notes which are available for download with every school group booking.
